FIU head coach Jesyka Burks-Wiley announced the addition of assistant coach Robyn Scherr-Wells to the FIU women’s basketball staff on Monday afternoon.
“I am thrilled to have Robyn join our family,” Burks-Wiley said. “Robyn has been able to get it done at multiple levels. Her experience is going to help us immensely as we climb up the conference standings, but who she is off the court will also leave a lasting impression. I look forward to the value she is going to add as an assistant coach to this program, but also as a member of the FIU community.”
Scherr-Wells joins FIU after spending three years as the top assistant at Davidson College where she helped rebuild the program. At Davidson, she recruited and coached six Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team selections, as well as one Most Improved Player, one Sixth Woman of the Year and one Rookie of the Year.
“Within the first few minutes of speaking with Coach Burks-Wiley, I knew I had to be a part of FIU Women’s Basketball,” Scherr-Wells said. “Our student-athletes are going to love playing for her. I am thrilled to be joining the FIU community and to be a part of coaching an exciting, fast-paced, intelligent brand of basketball with the Panthers. I can’t wait to get to know our players and get on the court with them.”
Prior to her time at Davidson, Scherr-Wells served as a head coach at Roosevelt University for five seasons before taking over at Davenport University for a pair of seasons. She compiled a 144-83 (.634) career record while at the helm of the two programs, while earning numerous accolades.
With Davenport, Scherr-Wells was named Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan College Coach of the Year in 2017, while recruiting and coaching seven WHAC All-Conference, two All-Freshmen, and two All-Defensive team selections, as well as one NAIA All-American.
At Roosevelt, Scherr-Wells was a two-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) NAIA Division II Coach of the Year (2013, 2014). In addition, Scherr-Wells also was named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region IV Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 campaign. In just the program’s third season of existence, she guided the Lakers to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, marking the school’s first-ever conference crowns. The team earned a spot in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship, where the Lakers advanced to the Sweet 16. Scherr-Wells’ squad finished the year with a school-record 28 wins while ranking No. 10 in the final national poll. Scherr-Wells ensured the Lakers were not a one-hit wonder, posting 21 wins, rising as high as No. 5 in the national rankings and making a return trip to the national tournament the following year.
Scherr-Wells is a 2001 graduate of the University of Michigan where she graduated with distinction and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Movement Science and Athletic Training. She went on to earn a Master’s Degree of Business Administration from Roosevelt in 2014.
